Description of Service

ECT is a procedure in which electric currents are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. ECT is an non-medication alternative used to treat certain mental illnesses by quickly reversing symptoms. The controlled settings help reduce any risk to patients. ECT is a good alternative for patients who haven’t seen success with medications or other forms of therapy. It can also be useful for patients who are pregnant and cannot take medications out of precaution for the developing fetus. It is additionally helpful for adult patients who cannot tolerate drug side effects.

ECT treatments require general anesthesia is required.

ECT is used to treat specific mental health conditions including:

  • Severe depression
  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Treatment resistant epilepsy
  • Severe mania
  • Catatonia, agitation and aggression in people with dementia.

ECT often quickly resolves the symptoms of major depression, including depressed mood, lack of interest, appetite and weight disturbance, sleep disturbance, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, loss of self-esteem, and thoughts of suicide.
